Headshots & Branding Photos
Prep Guide
Your Headshots are booked, now what?
Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, launching a new business, or simply need a fresh professional portrait, a great headshot is an investment in your personal brand. But showing up “camera ready” doesn’t just happen—it takes a little planning. Here are some things to keep in mind as you prep for your session, and to help you feel comfortable and confident.
Here is what you need to know:
Plan Your Wardrobe Ahead of Time
Your outfit should be an extension of your professional self—polished and confident, yes, but also true to who you are. Think clean, elevated styles that feel appropriate for your field. A few tips:
Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel great.
Wear a flattering neckline (e.g. V-necks, scoop necks, or collared shirts), as they tend to photograph beautifully.
Avoid busy patterns, loud prints, or logos that can distract from your face.
Solid colors are your best friend! Think about a color that you know you look good in and makes you feel good.
It can be helpful to lay out a few options in advance and bring those options with you—this gives you wiggle room for different backdrops and lighting scenarios. Sometimes the outfit you brought with you as an afterthought is the one you like best in the end. Bringing layers makes changing easy—think jackets, cardigans, and scarves.
2. Hair, Makeup & Nails: The Details Matter
Your hair and makeup should enhance your natural look and reflect the vibe you want to convey—whether it's fresh and natural or a little more glam.
Hair: Make sure your hair is clean, styled, and feels like you. If you’re planning a trim, try not to do it the night before—give it a few days to settle.
Makeup: Keep it natural and photo-friendly. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, consider hiring a makeup artist. Rebecca Kirkwood is a magician!
Nails: Don’t forget about your hands! They might just make a cameo appearance. Treat yourself to a manicure ahead of time.
3. Avoid Last-Minute Beauty Treatments
Steer clear of facials, waxing, or anything that might leave your skin red, blotchy, or irritated. It’s best to schedule these treatments at least a few days in advance so your skin has time to calm down and glow.
4. Communicate the Purpose of Your Photos to Your Photographer
Is this headshot for a new job? Your website? A dating profile? A creative portfolio? Let your photographer know! The more we understand about the why, the better we can tailor your session—from lighting and posing to wardrobe guidance and backdrops.
5. Practice Your Expression
This might feel a little weird at first but . . . practice your smile in the mirror. Try a few different looks: friendly and approachable, confident and strong, maybe even a soft laugh. Finding your “signature expression” in advance can help ease nerves and give you confidence when the camera starts clicking.
6. Take Care of Yourself: Hydrate, Rest, & Snack Up
The basics matter! The day/night before your session, get a good night’s sleep, drink plenty of water, and have a light snack before you come. When you feel good on the inside, it shows on the outside.
*Bonus Tips:
Bring your favorite lip balm/neutral lip gloss. It’s great for retouching.
Put some thought into your accessories—simple earrings or a classic watch can add just the right detail. If a special piece of jewelry is part of your every day, wear it. Let your photo reflect who you are “in real life.”
Finally, trust your photographer. Remember, they're there to guide you, cheer you on, and bring out your best, most authentic self.
If you’ve made it this far, THANK YOU and I can’t wait to capture your new headshots!
