Fine Art School Portraits

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in Fine Art School Photography. I think your preschool would be a perfect fit for this service as it offers a genuine and personal way to capture each child. As a member and mom in the SOMA community myself, I know it will be greatly valued!

What are fine art school portraits?

Fine art school portraits are a modern approach to traditional school photography. I will be using a very simple black, white or gray background (your choice!) so the attention is all on capturing the individual personality of your child. My goal is to deliver a classic and timeless portrait that lets your child’s uniqueness shine through. Children are encouraged to be themselves and will never be forced to smile.

Who am I?

As a Maplewood resident for almost 12 years, I couldn’t imagine a better place to live, own a business and raise my two daughters. I love being a part of the diverse and creative community!

In my photography business, Emily Feinsod Photography, I focus on capturing authentic moments and documenting small details. This includes maternity, newborn and family clients in SOMA and surrounding towns. I have been an established business in the community for 10 years. Fine art school portraits became an additional service for individual families and schools when there became a need during COVID times. I set up a photo studio in my garage and invited the neighborhood kids over- the rest is history!

Before running a photography business, I earned a MA in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and taught art and photography for 8 years in Basking Ridge, NJ and NYC. After having my daughters, I wanted more freedom to do what I love (photography!) and ventured out on my own.

What is the process?

Prior to the shoot day, we would set up a date for me to visit the school and scout a perfect location.

I bring all of my own equipment, including a backdrop, stands, lighting, cameras and so on. I will also bring an assistant with me the day of the shoot to help.

Approximately 1-2 minutes is spent with each child. My goal is to capture a range of expressions for each child, however some will naturally be more comfortable in front of the camera.

Afterwards, I professionally edit the photos, aiming for 2-5 final images (usually more!) per child. I upload the photos to a private online gallery. Each class will have their own password-protected folder with the final images (each child with their own folder of images within the class folder). Parents can place orders from their gallery, including digital files, photo prints and packages of prints or canvases.

The ordering window will be 1-2 weeks from the time of gallery delivery.  I will then place a bulk order, package the prints and deliver to the school for distribution.

What about a class picture?

Yes, there can be a class picture! This will be included in the gallery for purchase.

What is the cost?

All profit is made through orders placed in the gallery, such as digital files, prints and packages. There is no sitting fee or other charge for taking photos. Prints can be ordered a la carte or in packages. I will send along an example price guide.

Can siblings be included?

Yes! I love capturing siblings together. If siblings are not students at the school, I prefer the parent to bring them in before we start the individual classes.

Can teachers get their photos taken as well?

Yes! Teacher photos (the digital files) are complementary and can be used for the school website, marketing or however the school needs.
