What to Wear: Family Sessions

Your outfit selections are one of the most importantdecisions you will make about your session. Carefully considering your clothing colors, patterns, textures, and accessories all play a role in the outcome of your final images. be sure to make a plan, you’ll be happy you did.

COORDINATE COLORS

Think coordinated, not matching!

CONSIDER THE LOCATION

Where your session will be? Be thinking about colors that will stand out against that background. Keep in mind the time of year. If it is summer and we will be at the park, a green palate for the family will make you blend in when you want to be standing out.

HOME SWEET HOME

Also, consider the color palette of your home. If you plan to display your images on your walls, think about colors that coordinate with your decor.

NEUTRALS + COLOR

Use the rule of 3 when choosing a color scheme for your family with one of the colors being a neutral (ie: gray, black, white, navy, khaki). Too many colors can be really busy on camera. Once you have selected your color scheme, choose coordinated variations of those colors for everyone to wear.

ADD LAYERS

Layers photograph awesome! Jean jackets, vests, cardigans, an open button down shirt over a tee, tank or dress. Layers add visual depth to the images.

PATTERNS + TEXTURES

A large pattern can mix with a small pattern nicely, for example a larger floral dress with a smaller gingham shirt would do well. But too many large patterns or too many small patterns make the image too busy and takes the attention away from you. If you stick to the color rule of 3, your outfits should blend together nicely.

ACCESSORIZE

Accessories can add a pop of color. Use a scarf, head band, statement necklace or bold earrings to add a touch of a bright color.

AVOID ALL BLACK+WHITE

The camera has a hard time reading all white or all black and the details can get lost. Florescent colors also do not photograph well and are difficult to coordinate with.

SAY NO TO LOGOS + CHARACTERS

Your session is about you and graphics will distract from the real focal point of the photos – you and your family!

BE CLASSIC

You will have these photos to cherish forever. Dressing in classic clothes helps to give your images a timeless feel.

GET INSPIRED

Pinterest can be a helpful resource to help you with color palettes and outfit suggestions depending on season and location. But most important…be you and be comfortable. Aim to dress as the best version of you. We are going to be moving around and your kids will be cuddling with you so be comfortable – you don’t want to be wearing something you are constantly tugging at or needing to adjust.
